“Ashanti Airline” – Dr. Osei Kwame Despite and Dr. Ofori Sarpong set to establish a new airline

Osei Kwame Despite and his best friend Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, are said to have joined the government to launch a new home-based carrier.

The two business moguls have already obtained an Air Carrier Licence (ACL) under the brand name Ashanti Airlines, according to Aviation Ghana.

The duo has also submitted the appropriate documentation for the first phase of the regulatory processes leading to the issuance of an Air Operator Certificate, according to the report (AOC).

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the country’s aviation authority, requires these two permits in order for an airline to operate in Ghana.

According to Aviation Ghana sources, Ashanti Airlines has already informed the committee established by the Minister of Transport, Kweku Ofori Asiamah, to review all bids for the project of their intention to partner with the government to launch a new home-based carrier.

As a result, Ashanti Airlines becomes one of two local-investor-backed enterprises interested in partnering with the government. JNH Group is another prospective local partner.

The Despite Group boss owns a number of non-media-related businesses in the finance and food and beverage sectors in addition to being one of Ghana’s largest media organizations.

Following the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004, Ghana has been without a national carrier since the bankruptcy of Ghana International Airlines in 2010.

Attempts to build a new home-based carrier have resulted in the signing of memorandums of understanding with Ethiopian Airlines and EgyptAir, with no obvious results.
